Artist Statement
I am a portrait and figure sculptor living in Northern New Mexico. Inspired by the MET's collection of Degas' figure studies, I began sculpting at the Palette & Chisel in Chicago in 2003. I work from family, friends, neighbors, and organize a studio model group. I also enjoy sitting under the aspens at a friends' sheep ranch nearby, doing studies of Dorpers grazing by the rise of El Salto Mountain.
Currently I work in high fire clay bodies suitable for firing in an anagama woodfire kiln. Fire and ash patina the work in unique and dramatic manner depending upon proximity to firebox and flow of the flame. Anagama describes an ancient Japanese woodfire pottery kiln. My work was fired in a 24 foot kiln designed and organized by John Bradford. The process is labor intensive with a rotating team continuously feeding the fire. This kiln fires five to seven days, consuming approximately six cords of wood. Upon reaching 2400 degrees F, the atmosphere within the kiln dances with flames streaming around glowing forms. Ash rides the flame, settling and melting on figures and pots. A well developed coal bed grabs wood, sending a roar of flame through the chamber and up the chimney. It is a magical sight beneath starry night skies!
